Thyssenkrupp will conduct a technical study for a new project for green hydrogen and green ammonia for Helios Industry, a UAE based company.
If successful, a water electrolysis plant and an ammonia plant will be built based on thyssenkrupp technology in Kizad in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It will be the first commercial plant to produce CO2-free ammonia from renewable resources in the UAE. The plant will integrate thyssenkrupp’s technologies for green hydrogen and green ammonia into a green value chain.
Helios Industry is a private Special Project Vehicle (SPV) that plans to invest over AED 3.67 billion (US$ 1 billion) to construct the plant. In the first phase, a multi-megawatt electrolyser plant and an ammonia production plant with a capacity of 40,000 tonnes/year will be developed. The capacity will be expanded to 200,000 tonnes/year of green ammonia in the next step. The plant will be powered by its own 800 MW solar power plant within Kizad and will use solar energy to electrolyse water to produce hydrogen.
As a specialist in chemical plant engineering, thyssenkrupp offers various integrated solutions based on its water electrolysis technology, including processes for producing sustainable ammonia, methanol and synthetic natural gas (SNG).
M K Saiyed, MD of Helios said, “This project is an important milestone in the UAE’s transition to a lower-carbon, renewable energy future. The new plant will produce green ammonia, which as an energy source enables easy transport of renewable energy, e.g. by ship. It can also be used as an emission-free transport fuel and in the fertiliser and chemical industries.”
