Octopus Hydrogen to supply green hydrogen to ZeroAvia

Octopus Hydrogen to supply 100% green hydrogen to ZeroAvia HyFlyer II programme, which aims to develop a hydrogen-electric powertrain.

Octopus Hydrogen (a part of Octopus Energy Group) signed an agreement with ZeroAvia (hydrogen-electric aircraft developer) to supply 100% green hydrogen to ZeroAvia’s R&D centre at Cotswold Airport in Kemble, UK.

ZeroAvia will use the hydrogen during the testing, certification and first commercial operations of its zero-emission hydrogen-electric aircraft powertrain technology. Octopus Hydrogen will provide over 250 kg/day of green, fuel cell grade and high-pressure hydrogen for delivery into ZeroAvia’s mobile refuelling unit.

ZeroAvia will supplement on-site electrolysis hydrogen production with supply from Octopus Hydrogen to power its HyFlyer II project. The HyFlyer II programme aims to develop a certifiable 600kW hydrogen-electric fuel cell powertrain to power a 19-seat aircraft with a 500 nautical mile range. ZeroAvia aims to bring this powertrain technology to market by 2024 to enable commercial zero-emission flights. The UK Government also backs the project.

ZeroAvia and partners in HyFlyer projects have already developed the Hydrogen Airport Refueling Ecosystem (Hare), which included an on-site electrolyser and was used to power a six-seat Piper Malibu aircraft part of HyFlyer I. However, there is now an additional supply of green hydrogen required to supplement on-site production.

William Rowe, Founder and CEO of Octopus Hydrogen, said, “Aviation is a perfect use case for green hydrogen, and we are delighted to be supporting ZeroAvia over the coming years with the supply of high pressure, pure and zero carbon hydrogen.”

Sergey Kiselev, VP Europe at ZeroAvia, commented, “To achieve a commercially available certified zero emission hydrogen-electric aircraft powertrain, we need large amounts of 100% green hydrogen.”
